FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RESIDENTS OF NORTH RALEIGH FILE FORMAL PROTEST PETITION WITH THE CITY OF RALEIGH TO BLOCK ENTRY OF PUBLIX
Today residents of Raleigh filed a formal Valid Statutory Protest Petition in response to the request by Morgan Property Group for rezoning to build an unwanted Publix Grocery Store on Falls of Neuse Road, in the Falls corridor. Raleigh’s 2030 Comprehensive Plan includes an action item that specifically refers to the Falls corridor, and the site is entirely within the corridor. The action item reads, “Maintain and protect the character of the Falls of Neuse corridor adjacent to the Falls Lake watershed north of Durant Road by preserving the extensive roadside vegetation, the Falls Lake dam, and Falls Community.” (See 2030 Comprehensive Plan.)
The Valid Statutory Protest Petition will require Raleigh City Council to cast a super majority vote in order to rezone the property. This is one of many steps that residents of North Raleigh will be taking to block the construction of this unwanted strip mall. Five years ago, the City Council voted to deny a smaller proposed development by a vote of 5-2.
To date nearly 2300 residents of the Falls community have signed a general petition asking the city to deny rezoning. The proposed development is completely out of scale and out of character for one of Raleigh’s most sensitive environmental areas. Presentation of the general petition to Raleigh City Council will be forthcoming as yet another of many steps that residents are taking and will take to block rezoning.
We agree with the city of Raleigh and their Comprehensive Plan and Future Land Use Map, all of which call for the protection of the character of this special corridor. It is a jewel that the City and all of her citizens can be proud of. We will continue to protect it and ensure that it remains a resource to be proud of, and trust that elected officials will uphold the Comprehensive Plan and deny any proposal that is detrimental to the City, its residents and natural resources.
